CodeBuddy for ChatGPT and Claude
Electrical code calculators inside your conversation, for the US and Canada. Free, and no account needed.
What it does
Ask a calculation question the way you would on site. CodeBuddy opens the right calculator with the values it understood. You confirm them, and you get a cited result: the numbers against the allowance, the worked math, the section references and the code edition the result is based on.
- Box fill, including "how many fit"
- Conduit fill
- Voltage drop
- Wire ampacity, with temperature and conductor-count correction
- Transformer protection and conductor sizing
- Residential service load
Connect it
ChatGPT: find CodeBuddy – Field Compliance in the plugin directory and connect it. To add it by URL instead, turn on developer mode, then go to Plugins → Add → Create custom MCP server, and use:
https://mcp.codebuddy.chat/mcp with no authentication.
Claude: find CodeBuddy in the connectors directory, or go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector with the same URL and no authentication.
Use it
- Ask, for example: "How many 12 AWG wires fit in a 4x4 by 1-1/2 box with two devices and a ground?"
- Check the card. Values the assistant filled in are marked AI guess. Answer anything still missing, such as the code edition, which is never assumed.
- Tap Confirm and calculate. Nothing is calculated before you confirm, and editing a value clears the result.
- Optionally continue in CodeBuddy: save the calculation to a job, ask about your jurisdiction, or pre-inspect with your camera.
In voice conversations there is no card: the assistant reads the inputs back and asks for your yes before calculating.
Limits
To keep the service fair and protect the reference data, use is limited to about 30 calculations an hour and 150 a day per person. Systematically stepping through table values pauses access for a while.
Privacy
The tools accept only structured calculator inputs, never free text, and CodeBuddy does not store your conversation. We keep standard technical logs to run and secure the service, short-lived rate-limit counters, and anonymous usage counts. We don't sell personal information or use it for advertising. See the privacy policy and terms.
